Introduction
Previous versions of this assignment focused on creating podcasts. I want to expand this to new forms of media. The only firm requirements of this assignment are:
- Create two media products (video, slideshow, podcast, VR experience) using a tool or platform that you are unfamiliar with.
- Publish as least one of these to your blog and optionally to other outlets such as Twitter or YouTube.
- The finished product lives at a static link (this probably rules out tools like Snapchat).
- The media is created by you.
There are no length requirements, on the high or low end, but do pay attention to the conclusions of some of the week’s readings as you decide on what length you create.
If you are a practicing classroom teacher, you can probably get some ideas from your students. Tools might include: Instagram, YouTube, Kaltura, podcasts, PlayPosit, EduPuzzle or others.

Optional Readings & Resources
Media creation is an area of expertise for me, and I have conducted a fair amount of research on my own. I am selfishly sharing resources that I have created as a result of this research. Much of it has been designed with an audience of educators in mind and a great deal of it will contain answers to likely questions.
Instructions
Create two pieces of media, one simple and rough and one planned and refined. You will publish at least the polished one in your portfolio. Use tools or platforms that you have not used before. You may use different tools for each piece.
The how of creation is up to you, and I encourage you to seek out resources and tools on your own as you begin this process. I have included several in the additional readings section. I am available for suggestions or consultation, but the actual process of creation is yours.
First, Do it Badly
This assignment originally asked you to create two original polished pieces of media content. I have changed this. I would like you to create one extremely rough, simple draft, and share this with your cohort in the Slack #av-club channel early on in the week. You may post it to public channels if you like, but the point is for it to be a rough cut, and not very serious. After doing this first, and maybe learning a few things, I would like you to create a different piece of media that is a bit more well-planned, refined and edited, for the public eye.
I am operating from a somewhat defensible pedagogical position in asking you to do something badly. It reduces the stakes of the activity and allows you to familiarize yourself with new tools without feeling the need to be perfect from the start. Here are two examples that I can share from my own practice, the first done *badly* and the second done more polished (half a dozen drafts and several weeks later).
Bad Version: Early Draft
Final Version: Good Enough to Share
Planning the Polished Version
For your polished media product, define the following before you begin creating. You will also want to include this information in your final post:
Who is your audience?
K-12 students? K12 teachers? Post-secondary teachers?
What is the purpose?
To introduce a concept? To give directions? To increase your presence as an instructor? Why does this piece of media exist?
What is the tool you chose and why did you choose it?
Give us a brief description of the tool you chose to use and why. If you used more than one tool in the creation process (you edited it in Adobe Premiere Clip and published to YouTube) that is fine, just mention the process.
What is the potential?
Describe the potential for media creation in K-12 or post-secondary teaching and learning. How can you or other teachers improve teaching practice through media creation? What are some of the pitfalls or unrealistic expectations that might be set by educators creating media?
Publication
In publishing your post, be sure to do the following:
- Embed the media into your post. If this is not possible due to the tool’s or WordPress’ security limitations, please make note of this and share a direct link. You can include a screenshot and hotlink from that as a way to make your blog post more visually appealing.
- Include accurate captions or transcripts (at least for the polished product).
- Post a 500+ word reflection on the process of creation, answering the questions above.
